The Financial Literacy Basics Entrepreneurs Need to Know
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Like most of you, I grew up with virtually no formal training on money. I learned that we definitely need money to get the things we want and one way or another, we have to work for it. Short of getting my passbook savings account back in the ’80s, I was taught very little about how to be financially literate. What happened? Assembly reintroduces bill requiring financial literacy class as graduation requirement for Wisconsin high schools
Financial literacy could become a required course for Wisconsin high school students under a revised state Assembly bill. Last year, Wisconsin’s GOP floated a plan to require high school students to complete a full credit of financial literacy in order to receive their diploma. It would have gone into effect for the 2022-23 school year. But the tight timeline and cost to school districts to implement the classes caused the measure to fail. The revised bill would shorten the requirement to a half credit and would not begin until the 2028 school year. On Thursday, the Assembly Committee on Education heard three hours of testimony from students, teachers and non-profits…

Can Your Clients Answer the ‘Big 3’ Financial Literacy Questions?
Another finding Lusardi and Mitchell emphasize in their work is that financial illiteracy is not only widespread in the general population, but it also differs markedly across demographic groups, potentially contributing to other types of economic inequality. One table in the new report, for example, compares financial literacy levels for women and men. The pair measure a sizeable gender gap for each of the financial literacy questions separately, as well as for the overall “big three” score. Specifically, women are 8 percentage points less likely to respond to the interest rate question correctly, 10 percentage points less likely to know about inflation and 17 points less likely to be knowledgeable…

There are problems with that “wisdom.” Problem #1: Financial education isn’t effective. Martha Menard found that, “One-size-fits-all financial education has little to no effect on changing real-world financial behaviors. A meta-analysis of more than 200 studies found…

Few topics are as stressful as money, and there’s nothing like tax season to amplify financial anxiety. The problem with money stress is that it creates a negative cycle. Research suggests that people who are anxious about money are less likely to plan for retirement, which in turn can increase anxiety about their financial future. About 41 percent of U.S. adults reported feeling both anxiety and stress when thinking about or discussing their personal finances, according to data from the 2018 Finra National Financial Capability Study.
